I think the State of the Nation Address by the president is largely Very good. However, as the party leader of UDM, a leader from, you know, northern Kenya, and a leader representing the pastoral communities. That address has fallen way short of addressing the issues bedevilling The pastoralism sector, because it has not been mentioned, for whatever it is the hustler fund, as it is. The Hustler fund has also not benefited the region because of the largely Muslim community and because of the interest factor that slush fund is not beneficial to the community and an issue that is very current extremely devastating of a lino has not been mentioned in as far as the region is concerned. And we, we come from a region that also has a major problem as a result of inadequate power supply because we are not connected to national electricity grid while you talk about coffee sector, milk sector, sugar sector and all of that the personal home sector has not been mentioned, as well as also problems affecting the region. What it appeared to me is a situation of all of us equal but others are more equal than others for the region I represent the mainstay of the economy of the region. What can and the enablers of the economic activities of that region such as, you know, connection to the national electricity grid? Or mini grids that are reliable to support cottage industries in that area that has not been mentioned as it is, and live livestock sector has not been mentioned completely. And so that I feel as a regional head as far as representative of pastoral community, we feel left out
Mandera Senator Ali Roba criticized the National Dialogue Committee, accusing it of overstepping its assigned roles. According to the Senator, there is confusion about the committee’s mandate, suggesting that it has shifted from reconciling President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga to becoming a preparation committee for a referendum. Roba expressed concern that the committee, initially intended to represent various stakeholders, now seems focused on only two figures.
During Mashujaa Day celebrations, Senator Roba stated, “In my view, the committee is overstepping their mandate of facilitating the reconciliation of the president and Raila Odinga. If the mandate had changed into a proxy referendum preparation team, Kenyans should be made aware.”
He further criticized the committee for collecting opinions without proper public participation, questioning its true mandate. Last month, three petitioners moved to court, challenging the constitutionality of the ongoing talks by the National Dialogue Committee. They argued that there was no public participation in its establishment, and the process is dominated by political elites seeking constitutional reforms for personal interests.
The petitioners, Issa Elanyi Chamao, Patrick Karani Ekirapa, and Paul Ngweywo Kirui, want the court to halt the committee’s operations and issue an interdict requiring Parliament to enact legislation guiding the consideration of constitutional questions before the National Dialogue Committee.
