The Overlooked Voices: A Closer Look at the State of the Nation Address

The recent State of the Nation Address by President Ruto has been hailed by many as largely positive, reflecting on the progress and challenges faced by the nation. However, the sentiments expressed by Mandera County Senator Ali Ibrahim Roba shed light on a significant aspect that seems to have been overlooked – the pastoral communities in northern Kenya.

In his capacity as the party leader of UDM and a representative of the pastoral communities, Senator Roba raises valid concerns about the apparent neglect of issues plaguing the pastoralism sector. Despite the overall positive tone of the address, it falls short in addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities, which play a crucial role in the region’s economy.

One of the notable issues highlighted by Senator Roba is the exclusion of the pastoralism sector from discussions surrounding the “hustler fund.” He points out that the largely Muslim community in the region, guided by religious principles that prohibit interest, has rendered the hustler fund less beneficial to them. This exclusion raises questions about the inclusivity of economic policies and their alignment with the diverse needs of different communities.

Additionally, the pressing concern of Elino, a current and devastating issue in the region, is notably absent from the State of the Nation Address. The omission of such a critical matter highlights the importance of addressing real-time challenges that directly impact the well-being of the people.

Senator Roba further emphasizes the inadequate power supply in the region, resulting from a lack of connection to the national electricity grid. While sectors like coffee, milk, and sugar are mentioned, the essential personal home sector and the associated problems in the region remain unacknowledged. This omission raises questions about the equitable distribution of resources and attention to all regions.

The perceived inequality becomes even more pronounced as Senator Roba discusses the need for enablers of economic activities in the region, such as connection to the national electricity grid or reliable mini-grids to support cottage industries. The absence of these crucial elements from the address reflects a disparity in addressing the specific needs of different regions, potentially hindering economic growth and development. In conclusion.

Senator Ali Ibrahim Roba’s remarks bring to light the importance of recognizing and addressing the unique challenges faced by the pastoral communities in northern Kenya. The State of the Nation Address, while commendable in various aspects, prompts a reflection on the inclusivity of policies and the necessity of acknowledging and acting upon the specific concerns of all regions for a truly equitable and progressive nation.

What it appeared to me is a situation of, all of us are equal but others are more equal than others therefore we feel left out.
