The political landscape of Mandera East is once again alive with anticipation as Hon. Omar Maalim Sala, the current Speaker of the Mandera County Assembly and former MP, formally receives the backing of his Murule–Sharmake immediate family for the 2027 parliamentary race.

This endorsement is not just symbolic — it’s strategic. The Murule–Sharmake family forms a critical voting bloc within the Murule community, and their unity behind Omar Sala could seal the cracks that cost him victory in 2022, when he lost to Hon. Hussein Weytan of ODM by just over 2,000 votes.

Clan Dynamics and Family Power

Both Weytan and Omar hail from the Murule clan, meaning the contest will again be largely an internal clan showdown. However, the Sharmake sub-clan’s decision to close ranks around Omar has shifted perceptions. Insiders say the endorsement came after months of consultations among elders, youth leaders, and religious figures seeking to avoid the vote-splitting witnessed last time.

If, as rumored, a member of Weytan’s extended family joins the race, it could split his traditional base, inadvertently giving Omar Sala a head start in consolidating Murule votes early.

UDM’s Growing Dominance

Omar Sala will fly the flag of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) — now Mandera’s most dominant political outfit under Senator Ali Roba. UDM captured a majority of parliamentary seats in Mandera during the 2022 elections, cementing its influence across the county.

Reclaiming Mandera East, which narrowly slipped to ODM, is seen as UDM’s unfinished business. Party strategists view Omar’s return as the best chance to regain that seat, given his proven popularity, grassroots presence, and administrative experience as County Assembly Speaker.

Cross-Clan and Community Calculations

While Murule votes will define the race’s foundation, Mandera East’s outcome often hinges on cross-clan alliances. The Garre community, known as a decisive swing bloc, is reportedly warming up to Omar Sala’s candidacy, viewing his leadership style as more inclusive and development-oriented. Smaller “corner” and minority communities, keen on stability and service delivery, could also align behind him.

Analysts say that if Omar secures a solid Murule base while attracting moderate support from Garre and other minority voters, he could flip the seat comfortably in 2027.

A Comeback Story in Motion

For Omar Sala, this race is more than a political comeback — it’s a statement of unfinished work. Having served as MP and later as Speaker, he’s viewed as a steady hand with deep understanding of local governance. His renewed campaign narrative focuses on unity, equitable development, and restoring Mandera East’s voice in national politics.

As one elder put it during the endorsement gathering:
“We are rallying behind our son Omar Sala, not just because he is one of us, but because he delivers. This time, the Murule vote will speak in one voice.”

With UDM’s machinery, clan unity, and a rejuvenated campaign team, Hon. Omar Sala’s 2027 bid is shaping up as one of Mandera’s most closely watched political stories — and perhaps, one of its most decisive.
