The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning about possible flooding in several counties. These include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Embu, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Murang’a, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale, and Mombasa.

The department predicts heavy rain starting from Friday and continuing into Saturday. The rain is expected to extend to Northeastern, the Central Highlands, and the South Coast from October 28th, accompanied by strong winds. Residents in these counties are advised to be vigilant as floods may occur, leading to potential property damage. The strong winds could also cause roof damage, uproot trees, and harm structures.

The Meteorological Department urges people to avoid driving or walking in moving water and open fields to prevent being carried away by floods. Additionally, it is recommended to stay away from trees and open windows during the rain to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.

This warning follows the department’s earlier announcement that the country would continue to experience high levels of rainfall, particularly in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and North-eastern Kenya. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has also provided guidelines to counties to prepare for the anticipated El Nino rains.
